The Offering
Spirituality permeates the lives of the Balinese. Every home has a small shrine/spirit house. Each morning the women prepare simple offerings and place them in front of their home and businesses as expressions of gratitude to benevolent spirits, and to placate mischievous demons to prevent them from disturbing the harmony of life. They take offerings of fruit and flowers to the temples during festivals and at other times.
Water and music are important parts of their rituals and festivals. For festivals and ceremonies everyone must wear a sarong and sash and the men wear a scarf tied around their head. The sarong slows you down so that you can see things and act well. The sash reminds you to speak well, and to breathe deeply. The head scarf is a reminder for right and good thinking.
The Balinese are a gentle people. They believe that children are important and to be treasured. A little child is considered holy and close to God and therefore is closely looked after. Babies are tied to their mothers or other relatives so are in constant physical contact much of the day. Men also care for the children.
