Thailand Girl
“Preserving Tradition”

I am a member of a hill tribe in Northern Thailand. We carry on the traditions of our ancestors, weaving cloth on backstrap looms and embroidering clothes with our tribal designs. We have our own language and spiritual beliefs. My mother wears a hat decorated with silver and we wear silver jewelry which is a sign of or wealth.

We live in wooden stilt houses with thatched roofs and use a ladder for stairs. The pigs, chickens and water buffalo live under and around the house. We don't have much furniture and sleep on straw mattresses laid on the floor. My father uses the water buffalo to plow the fields and to pull our wagon. The roads leading to our village are dirt and the land around us is jungle with rivers and waterfalls. You may visit us but please honor our ways and don't try to 'modernize' us to your ways.
